The Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Buenos Aires) was inaugurated in December 1896 in the Bon Marché department store building on Florida Street, now the Galerías Pacífico. From its inception, it was conceived as a space destined to house international art from all historical periods and to promote and consolidate a then-nascent Argentine art.

By 1910, during the Centennial of the May Revolution, the Museum’s collection already included works by masters Francisco de Goya, Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, Edgar Degas, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

In 1911, the second home of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes was inaugurated: the Argentine Pavilion, a monumental structure that the country had used at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair and installed in Plaza San Martín. New acquisitions were exhibited there, expanding the collection, such as Édouard Manet’s The Surprised Nymph and Claude Monet’s Banks of the Seine.

In its more than 120 years, the National Museum of Fine Arts has built an important collection of more than thirteen thousand pieces from different artistic periods, both national and international, making it one of the most important cultural institutions on the continent.
