Located in the pampas of the Buenos Aires province, on the outskirts of the capital, the ranch tour in the Pampas from Buenos Aires is one of the most popular destinations in the region to experience a taste of traditional gaucho culture.
Founded at the turn of the last century by an Argentine citizen of Irish descent, the ranch encompasses 2,965 acres (1,200 hectares) of land, originally used for agricultural activities, including cattle ranching.
Visitors to Estancia Santa Susana Ranch are greeted with two Argentine specialties, hot empanadas and wine. After a tour of the grounds by carriage or horseback, including a stop at the Spanish colonial house that now contains a museum, guests enjoy a parrillada, an Argentine-style barbecue that remains a popular weekend tradition even among modern porteños. Tango dancers and folk singers entertain during the meat-focused lunch.
In the afternoon, visitors to the ranch sit and watch as a group of gauchos display their impressive skills on horseback.
History
The homage to his wife, Susana Caffrey, was paid by Francisco Kelly, descendant of Irish, by giving the name Santa Susana to these lands at the end of the last century.
The ranch is located in the Campana district, near the town of Los Cardales, in the province of Buenos Aires
For about three decades we have received visitors from all over the world and we use our 1,200 hectares of land mainly for agricultural purposes.
The tourist, both of national and foreign origin, will be able to enjoy within our borders any day of the week except Mondays.
Welcome
At Estancia Santa Susana Ranch, there is a certain way of welcoming visitors: with hot empanadas and wine, both Argentine staples. Once you’ve had the opportunity to tour the area in a horse-drawn carriage or on horseback, you are invited to enjoy a typically Argentine lunch: a barbecue, where meat is the main attraction and the tradition of the weekend is still in effect.
In fact, it’s so beloved that it’s also popular with some of the more contemporary porteños. While guests enjoy their food, they will also be able to enjoy some performances, with tango dancers and folk singers providing entertainment. The property’s old colonial house also houses a museum, and is definitely worth a visit as well.

Estancia La Sofía Hotel & Polo Ranch in the Pampas
Our history:
We were all united by our love for polo. Tournament at the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona (Spain), where the German Silke and her husband Marcos Anton Güiraldes met for the first time. Marcos, great-nephew of the well-known writer Ricardo Güiraldes and author of the book “Don Segundo Sombra”, was running “Los Pingüinos Polo Club” in Buenos Aires, one of the most prestigious polo clubs in Argentina, at that time.
Marcos also traveled to Spain as a professional polo player. They visited Marcos’ hometown of San Antonio de Areco in 2002 while searching for their “ideal” residence in Argentina. In his ideal world, a polo club and a small hotel would be established to house Marcos’s employers, as well as many other sports and outdoor enthusiasts. They found Estancia La Sofía Hotel & Polo Ranch in the Pampas by sheer luck; it was the ideal place to stay.
They started the project and construction while they were still living in Barcelona, had two children and later moved to La Sofía. At the age of five, the dream had already come true: a house in the tranquility of the countryside, a beautiful boutique hotel, two polo fields and a high-quality personalized service, with the care of the owners so that their guests have a unforgetable experience.
Estancia La Sofía Hotel & Polo Ranch in the Pampas is currently a functioning polo club that is officially recognized by the Argentine Polo Association and has access to their approved playing fields. The club’s general director, Marcos, also instructs polo, participates in dressage and horse breeding, and occasionally competes in official cups both in the country and abroad. At La Sofía, Silke and Marcos frequently participate in joint games, and Silke competes with her La Sofía team in AAP and women’s polo competitions. La Sofía was the winner of the first official women’s competition sponsored and organized by the AAP in 2010 (First Women’s Competition for the 2010 Apertura Handicap Cup).
Every year, the Tradition Cup is held at the ranch as part of the San Antonio de Areco Tradition celebrations.
Marcos and Silke, together with their children, have successfully combined their love of polo with their family life and are delighted to show their visitors this magnificent place.

SUITES
We have 6 comfortable Suites in La Sofía:
Two Grand Suites: The Grand Suite of the Patron & The Grand Suite Pampa. Two Superior Suites: The Old Room & The Polo Suite. Two Standard Suites: The Suite of Flowers & The Suite of Birds.
The Grand Suite and Superior Suite are spacious rooms with a KING bed, private access to one of the galleries and some with a fireplace. The bathrooms with shower and old bathtub are equipped with quality natural amenities with exclusive design.
GRAND SUITES
We suggest reserving a room in LA GRAND SUITE DEL PATRON or LA GRAND SUITE PAMPA for the visitor looking for the best accommodation. The two rooms are decorated in a colonial style and have wooden floors, luxurious modern beds, elegant Egyptian cotton sheets, desks and safes. Limestone mosaics with 20th century designs are used to decorate the spacious bathrooms.
Four meters from the main house, in a separate building, is the Grand Suite of the Patron. It also has a fireplace in addition to what has already been mentioned.
We suggest The GRAND SUITE PAMPA for a couple seeking seclusion or tranquility, as well as travelers who enjoy beautiful views. About a mile away from the main house, it stands. Located on the second floor of a tall tower (150 meters) attached to the Polo field.
The suite’s view of the rising sun is exceptional. The suite includes a large room with a King bed, a smaller room with a double bed, a large bathroom with shower and bathtub, and 2 separate rooms.
Suggestions: It is recommended to book a Superior or Grand Suite if you need a Twin room (two single beds). Families with small children can request a crib (for babies up to 2 years old) or an extra bed for up to two children to share a Superior or Grand Suite category room. The Grand Suite del Patrón and The Polo Suite (superior), which are connected by a small living room with TV and library, are best reserved together for families because they are more spacious.
Booking THE OLD ROOM together with a Standard, both located in the main house and divided by the living room and dining room, is another option for a family with children. Or, you can choose to book one of the two Standard rooms, which is superior to the other.
Estancia La Sofía Hotel & Polo Ranch in the Pampas
SUPERIOR SUITES
The spacious Superior Suites have a KING bed, one has a fireplace and private access to a gallery. Each room is decorated in a colonial style and has wooden floors (pinotea), luxurious contemporary beds, elegant Egyptian cotton sheets and a safe. The spacious bathrooms are adorned with limestone mosaics in 20th-century designs.
The main house is where THE OLD ROOM is located. With access to the gallery and a view of the polo fields, it is one of the original rooms of the town center from the beginning of the last century.
Estancia La Sofía Hotel & Polo Ranch in the Pampas
STANDARD SUITES
The main house is where the two Standard rooms and El Cuarto Viejo, a superior category room, are located. The Birds Suite, a standard room on the second floor, has a balcony. Colonial-style furnishings include comfortable contemporary beds, fine Egyptian cotton sheets, and a safe. Wood floors cover the floor of the FLOWER SUITE. Limestone mosaics with designs from the previous century decorate the bathrooms with modern showers.
Suggestions: Book a Superior or Grand Suite if you need a double room (two single beds). Families with small children can request a crib (for children up to two years old) or an extra bed for up to two children to share a Superior or Grand Suite category room. The Grand Suite del Patrón and The Polo Suite (superior), which are connected by a small living room with TV and library, are best reserved together for families because they are more spacious.
Booking THE OLD ROOM and Standard together in the main house, with the living room and dining room serving as a separation between them, is another option for a family with children. Or you can choose to book one of the two Standard rooms, which is superior to the other.
Meat and wine
La Sofía’s menus are carefully prepared so that its diners can enjoy homemade regional cuisine because at La Sofía we enjoy good food and good wine. Particularly Marcos, who is a fantastic “hobby” chef and personally oversees the cuts of meat and everything that happens in the kitchen thanks to his passion and authenticity.
Many of our guests have praised their irresistible tenderloin steaks as “the best ever,” and have done so on numerous occasions. The Creole roast, the empanadas, the early morning breads and jams, the selection of Argentine wines from the private winery and the vegetables from the ranch’s organic garden are always praised by our visitors. At tea time, Silke often delights them with delicious German recipes from her family.
A well prepared table is necessary for good eating. To make every meal a special occasion, we always pay attention to the smallest details.

Laguna Capri (Capri lagoon). Patagonia from Buenos Aires
Capri Lagoon Tour. Patagonia from Buenos Aires
The Capri lagoon is undoubtedly one of the main hiking destinations in the interior of the Los Glaciares National Park. Together with other trails such as the one that leads to Los Tres lagoon, “Vuelta al Fitz Roy”, Torre lagoon , Las Águilas, etc. have made this corner of Patagonia world famous for hiking and El Chaltén is known in Argentina as the national capital of trekking .
To the above, we must add that the spectacular nature and difficulty of the mountains in the sector–mainly highlighting the mount Fitz Roy and the Torre mountaine – also attract many mountaineers year after year who dream of the beautiful lines of granite and ice that lead to these Patagonian peaks.
The center of all mountain activity in this sector is El Chaltén, a small Argentine town founded in 1986 for reasons of sovereignty and which today has become a place that welcomes mountaineers, hikers and travelers from all over the world. From this town begins the walk to the Capri lagoon.
The Laguna Capri trail stands out for having beautiful views of the mountain Fitz Roy and its satellite needles. During the summer season, this trail is visited daily by numerous hikers, either as the main objective of the excursion, or as it is an obligatory step when heading towards the famous Los Tres lagoon.

Mount Torre. Patagonia from Buenos Aires
Tour to Cerro Torre. Patagonia from Buenos Aires
Its impressive beauty, its capricious shape as a result of glacial carving and the incredible history of its conquests make Mount Torre compete with the Fitz Roy, its northeastern neighbor, in celebrity and world renown.
It is located on the eastern border of the Southern Ice Field, in an area subject to dispute between Chile and Argentina and whose resolution has been frozen by a 1998 agreement between the two states. The fastest access is through El Chaltén, a small Argentine town founded in 1986 for reasons of sovereignty and which today has become a place that welcomes mountaineers, hikers and travelers from all over the world.
At 3,102m, Cerro Torre is a granite needle crowned by an impressive top mushroom that is generated not so much by falling snow as by the freezing of humidity brought by the violent Pacific winds and trapped in the walls of this mountain.
The western face of the mountain is covered by an almost constant crust of ice, product of the condensation of humidity coming from the west. The north face is perhaps the most dangerous because of the constant fall of material. The south is the most technical and difficult, with overhanging sectors.
The complex level of difficulty present on all its flanks, added to the great climatic instability, means that this mountain is reserved to be attempted only by the most experienced and talented mountaineers.
Located just over the eastern edge of the Southern Ice Field, it is located between the Bernardo O’Higgins National Park of Chile and Los Glaciares National Park of Argentina, within the group of peaks in the El Chalten area. It has the second height of this entire group after the Fitz Roy. Together with the Mount Egger and Mount Standhardt, it forms its own mountain range to the southwest of the fitz roy which is particularly hit by bad weather from the Pacific, so it is covered most of the time. This ridge extends south into the glaciated ridge Adela .

Huemul Glacier. Patagonia from Buenos Aires
Tour to Huemul Glacier. Patagonia from Buenos Aires
A few meters from Lago del Desierto, the trail to the Huemul glacier is one of the most attractive to visit in El Chaltén. With a unique forest, it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places for trekking.
The name of the small huemul deer has baptized one of the most beautiful glaciers in the region. The road to reach it forces the walker to carry out a different trekking, whose prize is at the end of the road.
This path seems easy, since at the beginning the terrain is flat enough for the walker to progress quickly and steadily without difficulty, and manage to cover a large number of meters without expending so much energy. But in a matter of minutes the landscape changes completely and the path takes a different direction; it gets darker at times, gets more locked up at others, and starts to slope up as we go. I mean, we will start going up.
The forest, gray at times, dry green at others and brown towards the ground, acquires a different physiognomy from that of most of the luminous paths that can be traveled on El Chalten and its surroundings.

Once again we head east to another small island where, depending on the time of year, there are two-haired sea lions.
Very close is the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, an authentic symbol of the city of Ushuaia, built in 1919. From there we spotted the island of rock cormorants.
On the way back, we disembark on Bridges Island to walk along a flora and birdlife interpretation trail, telling you the history of the Yámanas aborigines. On this island are the largest Yámana anthropogenic shell middens in the region.
Being the largest island, we touch the highest panoramic point from where we observe the magnificence of the Beagle Channel with the City of Ushuaia in the distance.
Together with our guide, we will discover all the secrets of the Park, while we enjoy the emotion of being at the End of the World.

Ushuaia Forests. “Tierra del Fuego The End of the World”
So that everyone wants to know and enjoy the wonderful views of the forest and the rivers that border two lakes, we created an authentic 4×4 journey, suitable for all types of travelers. People with reduced mobility or who prefer to rest their legs will be able to explore, photograph or simply let themselves be carried away by the unique nature of the Escondido and Fagnano lakes (Cami in its original name).
When we broke ground and launched this tour – in 1998 – no one else was doing anything like «»Lagos Off-Road»» which, even today, continues to characterize our emphasis on quality and professionalism to present each place in a fun way. Long the only one of its kind in Tierra del Fuego, our tour made it known to tourists and locals alike! places like the Laguna Bombilla. Now, «»Lagos Off Road»» is one of the main excursions in Tierra del Fuego and since then our proposal improves every year: since 2009, this tour receives constant praise on Tripadvisor as “the best excursion off the road in Ushuaia” of part of passengers from all over the world: from Texas, Paris, Buenos Aires, Lago Puelo and also from locals in Tierra del Fuego!
The company of our guides, the (already famous) meal in our refuge on Lake Fagnano and the Argentinian Malbec shared in a friendly atmosphere are memorable. Almost as much as the adventure of knowing the oldest parts of the ancient forest and the most unusual, beautiful and secret views of the enormous Fagnano Lake.
All those who want to live a more intimate excursion can hire their own guide and their own van to enjoy a “tailor-made trip”. There, small children can also join without age restrictions and the whole family can build their own path»

Snowmobile in Ushuaia. “Tierra del Fuego The End of the World”
We start with the pick up from the hotel, from where we will have a half hour transfer to Llanos del Castor, our winter resort. The excursion consists of 3 outdoor activities, always guided by trained personnel. First, we will do a light snowshoe trek on a frozen peat swamp. Snowshoes are very useful when there is a lot of snow, since they allow you not to sink into it.
Then you will go on a snowmobile ride on a circuit inside the beautiful snow-covered forest. If you have never ridden a snowmobile before, it will not be a hindrance. The guide will give instructions on how to do it and if you can’t, we’ll take you. Two people will go on each motorcycle and in the middle of the circuit there will be a change of driver so that both can handle it.
Finally, we will take a sled ride through the snowy forests to appreciate the Patagonian Fuegian winter in a unique way!
Finally, we will invite you to our cozy restaurant so that you can enjoy a hot lunch. Return to the hotel after having lived an unforgettable experience!

In this sector, the forest has the peculiarity of having some specimens of larches, hence the name of the waterfall. Then we continue the tour to Pampa Linda, a must stop for lunch. At the end of lunch we continue the journey to the end of the road and arrive at the foot of the highest mountain in the National Park, Cerro Tronador, so called because of the sound produced by the breaking and detachment of the glaciers lodged in its summits.
